|
The real scandal of psychoanalysis is not sexuality or even infantile sexuality, but fantasy. Though almost all psychoanalysts agree with the importance of unconscious fantasy, the definition of unconscious fantasy has been somewhat vague. In this paper, I review the vicissitudes in the definition of Freud’s concept of unconscious fantasy used by mainstream analysts. In the future, the definition and function of unconscious fantasy should be studied in hopes that a better understanding of patients’ unconscious fantasies will enable us to help them more effectively.
